Organizers
The symposium is sponsored and organized by the Department of English
and American Studies (Professor Josef Jařab) at Palacky University,
Czech and Slovak Association for American Studies in cooperation with
the Embassy of the U.S.A. in Prague.
Location
The symposium is held in a highly attractive, historical city of Olomouc
with a well-preserved Renaissance and Baroque historical centre, second
largest to Prague. Palacky University is situated in the center of the
old town. It is the second oldest university in the Czech lands.
Olomouc is easily accessible by express trains from Prague (ca 3 hours),
Vienna or Ostrava.
Format
The format of the
Colloquium gives space to one longer plenary paper on Friday the morning (60
minutes) followed by two or three shorter presentations (20-minute paper
and 10-minute discussion). The afternoon session consists of two
90-minute sessions each having three speakers. The lecturers are
encouraged to take a wider and more general perspective in order to
address a larger audience, consisting of university teachers of American
Studies, American Literature, or English language, and postgraduate and
graduate students. The evening program consists of films,
poetry readings, city tours and other activities.
Accommodation & Costs
Accommodation is provided for in a decent
student dormitory near the city centre. The price varies according to
number of beds (single/twin room), the average price is 10€/5€ pppn. You
can make your selection when filling out the application form. Olomouc
offers countless opportunities for accommodation in case you are looking
for a private place to stay. Unfortunately, we are unable to cover your
travel costs.
It is advisable to ask the aid of the American embassy in your
countries.
A selection of revised
papers presented at the symposium will be included in a collective
monograph to be
edited by the organizers and published by the Palacky
University.
